Do I Need to Be “Far Enough Along” to Apply?

This is the question that keeps more people from applying than any fear about cost, travel, or sharing a bathroom with strangers combined. So let’s just answer it directly.

The Short Answer

No. “Far enough along” isn’t a real bar, because it means something different for every single book. What matters isn’t whether you have a polished draft. It’s whether you’re actually ready to work on the book for four straight days.

Finish Your F*cking Book is for people who already know what the book is and need heavier writing time plus 1:1 coaching to actually get it done. Apply for the one that matches where you really are, not where you think you’re supposed to be by now.

Who Actually Gets Turned Down

People do get turned down. Here’s the honest list of why:

• The book isn’t in my wheelhouse and I don’t believe I can genuinely support it. I’d rather say so than take your money and half-help you.
• The person isn’t willing or wanting to actually do the work. This isn’t a vacation with a notebook as a prop. If you want 4 days away with zero intention of writing, there are lovely resorts for that. This isn’t one of them.
• I can’t accommodate a specific request — accessibility, dietary, or otherwise. I’d rather tell you honestly upfront than let you show up to something that doesn’t actually work for you.

What “Not a Fit” Doesn’t Mean

It doesn’t mean your book is bad. It doesn’t mean you’re not a real writer. Some of the best books I’ve worked on simply didn’t fit this specific room, this specific format, these specific 4 days. A no here is about fit, not worth. Don’t confuse the two.

The Actual Test

Ask yourself exactly one question: am I willing to sit in a room with five near-strangers and work on this book out loud for 4 days? If the answer is yes, apply. Let the application and the call sort out the rest. Don’t sort yourself out before you’ve even started — that’s a job I already do plenty carefully enough for both of us.
