Two applications landed 3 days apart last year.
The first had 60,000 words already written and couldn’t stand to open the file. The second had a notes app, a folder of voice memos, and a story they’d been telling at dinner parties for years without ever putting a line of it on paper.
Same room. Same 4 days. Two completely different problems.
That’s why my retreats have the names they have. Most people assume Find Your Voice and Finish Your F*cking Book are branding. They’re the sorting mechanism. Choose the wrong one and you’ll have a lovely time somewhere beautiful, then go home with roughly what you arrived with.
Let me save you the guess.
Find Your Voice is for the one who hasn’t started
You have the material. Plenty of it. What you don’t have is any idea what you sound like on a page.
Every time you sit down to write, something strange happens. The person who can hold a room for 45 minutes without notes turns into somebody writing a corporate brochure. Stiff. Careful. Weirdly formal. You read it back and think, who is this, because it certainly isn’t me.
That’s a voice problem, and you cannot outrun it by writing more words. You’ll just produce more words that don’t sound like you.
Find Your Voice is 4 days of locating the register you already have when you’re talking, then learning to get it onto the page on purpose. You and I work out what your book is actually about, who it’s for, and why now. You leave with a structure that holds and a voice that’s recognisably yours.
If you’ve never written a word but you know in your bones there’s a book in you, this is your room.
Finish Your F*cking Book is for the one stuck in the middle
You started. That was a while ago. Possibly a long while.
The manuscript exists. It lives in a folder you don’t open. You’ve restructured it twice, rewritten the opening 11 times, and somewhere along the way you stopped being able to tell whether any of it is good. You’ve told 3 people you’re nearly done. You are not nearly done.
Here’s what I know after 200+ authors: it’s almost never a discipline problem. People who build companies and run teams and hold stages do not suddenly lose their discipline the second they open a Word document. What’s happening is you’ve lost the thread, and you can’t find it because you’re too far inside it.
Finish Your F*cking Book is 4 days of someone who has done this 200+ times sitting across from you and finding the thread again. I’ll show you what to cut. You cut it. Then you write, properly, for hours at a stretch, with me on hand for the moment you hit the wall.
You leave with pages and the unglamorous certainty that you’ll finish it.
The test, if you’re still not sure
Open whatever you’ve got and read the first page out loud.
Cringe at how it sounds? Find Your Voice.
Sounds fine and you still don’t know what comes next? Finish Your F*cking Book.
No first page at all? Find Your Voice, and you already knew that.
Both rooms cap at 6 writers
Any more than 6 and somebody gets to hide at the back. Four days, own bedroom, every meal handled, all the coaching and workshop time, and a 1:1 with me before you arrive so we don’t waste day one working out what we’re doing.
The rooms that are open are here.
The right room is the one that matches the problem you actually have, not the one with the better name.
Though I’ll admit the second one has the better name.
