The 7 Questions — And What the Answers Reveal

QUESTION 1: Have you written or helped produce a completed, published book — and can I read it?

Why it matters: Publishing is an unregulated industry. This means that lived, proven experience is the only reliable credential. A coach who has never written or produced a book that reached readers is coaching from theory, not experience. You want to see the work. Ask for it. A credible coach will have it.

What to listen for: Specificity. Not ‘I’ve helped dozens of authors’ — but ‘here is a book I wrote, here is a book my client published, here is where you can read it.’ Personally, my track record spans four New York Times bestselling ghostwritten books, starting with a NYT bestseller completed before I was old enough to drive. The work is verifiable.

QUESTION 2: Do all of your clients finish their manuscript — and what happens if I get stuck?

Why it matters: Many book coaches work with clients who don’t finish. This is an uncomfortable truth the industry rarely states plainly. Completion rates for authors working without structured support are notoriously low — industry estimates suggest fewer than 10% of people who begin a book manuscript ever complete a full draft. A coach who cannot speak clearly about their completion record is, at best, one who hasn’t measured it.

QUESTION 4: What kind of authors do you work best with — and who is NOT a good fit for your approach?

Why it matters: The best coaches are honest about their ideal client. A coach who claims to work equally well with every kind of author, at every stage, with every type of book, is either inexperienced or not paying attention. Fit matters. A business book coach who has never worked with a memoirist is not automatically equipped to help a survivor write their story. A memoir specialist may not understand how to position a leadership nonfiction book for a consulting market.

What to listen for: Honest specificity about who the approach serves best — and who it doesn’t. You may pay for the coach and receive a programme coordinator. Ask directly: who will I be working with week by week? How long are our sessions? Are they one-on-one? How quickly do you respond if I have a question between sessions?

What to listen for: Direct access to the person whose expertise you are hiring.
